Navistar International Corp. and Volkswagen AG’s Truck & Bus unit are collaborating to introduce an all-electric medium-duty commercial truck for the North American market by about the end of 2019.
The Class 6-7 truck is being designed for urban delivery work and will be based on an existing Navistar model. Last year VW acquired 17% of Navistar, and the two began collaborating in March in purchasing and technology.
The companies also are integrating their vehicle connectivity work, beginning with the development of common hardware to be used in the cabs of trucks marketed by both brands. The effort aims to create a cloud-based, brand-independent system that could link 650,000 commercial vehicles worldwide. VW expects to introduce the platform for the system by the end of 2017.
The partners estimate their partnership will save them some $500 million over the next five years.
