Trilateral talks to update NAFTA will continue, even though negotiators failed to meet today’s deadline to ensure fast-track review by the current U.S. Congress.
House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said last week that missing the May 17 deadline for a written agreement would push approval into next year. By then, pundits say, the Republican party could lose control of the House and complicate passage of the updated agreement.
Still, Canadian, Mexican and U.S. trade envoys say they are optimistic about a deal to modify the say they continue to make progress in modifying the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement. Mexico, which will elect a new president in July, is expected to accept an agreement reached before the outcome of the vote.
