Automotive suppliers in North America are unsure whether to invest to meet higher demand or hunker down in anticipation of a global slowdown, according to the Automobile Supplier Barometer.

The index, which is compiled by the Original Equipment Suppliers Assn. from a survey of its members, was unchanged at 55 last month.

The Troy, Mich.-based group says the companies are worried that parts demand could stall because of Europe's debt crisis, the U.S. debt snafu and possible product launch delays by automakers.

But for now, suppliers are racing to meet growing orders from their customers. Nearly two-thirds of respondents say they are running additional shifts or overtime to meeting growing customer demand.
