Fiat Chrysler Automobile NV’s Maserati unit plans to add plug-in hybrid variants of most its models in coming years.
The luxury marque, which previously had eschewed electrified drivetrains, now concedes it will need hybrids to meet future fuel economy and emissions regulations, Autocar reports. The magazine says Maserati is developing plug-in hybrid versions of its Ghibli, GranCabrio, GranTurismo and Quattroporte cars in addition to the previously announced Levante SUV.
The base Levante, due to bow in the spring of 2017, is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March. It will share a platform as well as V-6 and V-8 engines with the Ghibli and Quattroporte. The hybrid variant likely will follow in late 2017 or early 2018.
The only model not expected to offer a hybrid system is the upcoming Alfieri sports car due in 2018, according to Autocar. Company officials stress that all plug-in hybrids must meet Maserati’s performance requirements or they won’t be built.
