Vietnam and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plan to partner on the development of electric vehicles, The Nikkei reports.
The newspaper says MMC and Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade are expected to announce the initiative today after signing a memorandum of understanding. The project’s objective will be to determine the type of EVs best-suited for Vietnamese roads and assess the potential for a charging infrastructure.
Vietnam’s annual vehicles sales were about 273,000 vehicles last year. But the government predicts the sales pace will reach 600,000 units in 2025, creating air pollution problems. Pollution also is being exacerbated by a rush to build coal-fired power stations to keep pace with a growing economy.
Electrified cars are virtually nonexistent in Vietnam today, The Nikkei says. The newspaper notes that the country has no local production capacity for EVs and only recently opened its first EV charging station.
