Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to focus more on crossover vehicles—including four hybrid and all-electric variants—in coming years. But it has no immediate plans to replace its i-MiEV all-electric subcompact car or conventionally powered Lancer sedan.
First up is the previously announced plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander midsize crossover/SUV due in mid-2016. This will be followed in late 2017 by a new small crossover and a plug-in hybrid variant positioned between the Outlander and the compact Outlander Sport, CEO Osamu Masuko tells Automotive News.
A new Outlander will bow after 2017 and the next-generation Outlander Sport is due by the end of the decade, Masuko says. The redesigned Outlander will include a plug-in hybrid model, while the Outlander Sport will have an all-electric variant.
Crossovers currently account for 58% of Mitsubishi’s sales volume in the U.S., AN notes. It says the carmaker also plans to open an advanced technology office early next year in Silicon Valley.
