Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit will preview its electric vehicle strategy with a concept SUV at the Paris auto show in September, Autocar reports.
A company source tells the U.K. enthusiast magazine the EV concept will provide “clear insight” into the technical layout, exterior design, overall dimensions and interior features of a production model to be launched in 2019. The SUV would be the first of four dedicated Mercedes EVs, Autocar says.
The brand's current EVs are modified versions of its B-Class and Smart ForTwo small car models. But last month Autocar reported that the carmaker is developing a new Modular Electric Architecture (MEA) to carry several new EVs, including a crossover/SUV and two sedans. The platform also is expected to be used for Mercedes’ upcoming GLC Fuel Cell vehicle.
The purpose-built MEA will allow the new models to optimize performance capabilities and incorporate design characteristics that reflect the “unique properties of electric vehicles,” according to the Mercedes source.
Separately, Mercedes-Benz marketing chief Ola Kallenius says the company is evaluating a potential entry into the Formula E electric car racing series. Participation, he notes, will be predicated on a “clear technology transfer” that supports future production programs.
