Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit says it may eventually group its growing number of “green” vehicles under a new sub-brand.
The brand's immediate focus is on launching several new plug-in hybrid, pure-electric and fuel cell-powered models, according to Ola Kallenius, who heads Mercedes’s sales and marketing efforts. But once this is accomplished, he tells Autocar, the carmaker will evaluate the potential for a dedicated sub-brand similar to BMW AG’s “i” unit, which was formally launched in 2013 with the i3 EV and i8 plug-in hybrid.
By the end of next year, Mercedes’ lineup will include10 plug-in hybrids, three EVs and one fuel cell vehicle, Kallenius says. The EV trio will feature a pair of battery-powered variants of the new Smart ForTwo and an updated version of the B250e small car. The fuel cell vehicle will be based on the GLC crossover. A long-range EV also is said to be in the works.
