Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit says it will lower Chinese prices on four U.S.-produced models in response to China’s plan to drop import tariffs on such vehicles to 15% from 40%.
The price cuts will range between 36,000 and 135,000 yuan ($5,200-$19,600), according to the company. Daimler’s action follows BMW AG’s announced price reduction on Saturday of 3%-7% on X5 and X6 series crossover vehicles produced in Spartanburg, S.C.
China agreed last Friday to restore its import duties on American-made cars to 15%—the same amount it levies on cars received from other countries—for three months beginning Jan. 1. The reduction is part of a cease fire between China and the U.S. in their simmering trade war as negotiations swing into serious discussions next month.
