Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz E-Class midsize cars get a major freshening for 2014 with a redesigned front end, powertrain modifications that boost performance and fuel economy and a new array of electronic systems that intervene in certain braking, lane keeping and steering situations.

Mercedes unveiled the updated E-Class models on Monday at the Detroit auto show. The lineup sedans, coupes, cabriolets and wagons is scheduled to go on sale this spring.

The base powerplant for 2014 is a 190-hp, 2.0-liter diesel. Topping out the E-Class engine options for the American market will be a 5.5-liter turbocharged V-8 that makes 402 hp. Buyers also can choose a mild hybrid that couples a temporary-assist 27-hp electric motor with a 3.5-liter, 305-hp V-6. Daimler expects the combination to achieve a U.S. highway fuel economy rating of 30 mpg.

Optional electronic control systems in the 2014 E-Class include a steering assist program that keeps the vehicle centered in its lane and can semi-autonomously follow in-line traffic.

Brake assist, which couples with cross-traffic and pedestrian sensors, can boost braking power to help avoid a crash. An active lane-keeping system applies the brakes on one side help prevent the car from leaving its lane when there is another vehicle detected in the driver's blind spot.

Active parking assist can automatically park the vehicle in both parallel and perpendicular spaces.
