Members-Only EV Charging Services Debut in Japan

Two ventures in Japan are introducing electric vehicle recharging services that give paying subscribers access to thousands of quick chargers in the country.
Nissan Motor Co.'s Japan Charge Network Co. venture, Sumitomo and other partners will introduce their service next month with 50 charging stations. The group aims by 2020 to sign at 400,000-500,000 members and expand to 4,000 stations.
The service charges individual members, who pay recharging fees separately, about $12 per month for access to its chargers. Corporate members will pay as much as $64 per month.
Honda, Mitsubishi and Toyota are backing a separate service, Charge Network Development LLC. The company will launch a similar members-only service in November at 200 locations in eastern and western Japan. Charge Network's plan will charge monthly fees ranging from $13 for individuals to $40 for corporations.
Both ventures expect their services to promote the sale of EVs in Japan.
