Hybrid vehicles will account for at least of half of McLaren Automotive Ltd.'s lineup by 2025, CEO Mike Flewitt tells Auto Express.
Flewitt says he would like to make all future models hybrids to boost driving performance. But he notes that the added cost and weight of dual power systems still makes hybrids impractical for some models.
McLaren currently sells two hybrid cars: the flagship P1 supercar and its P1 GTR track-only derivative. The $1.35 million P1 teams a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 with an electric motor to produce a combined 903 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque. The GTR version makes 986 hp.
McLaren previously has said it plans to introduce one new model or derivative every year. Next up will be a conventionally powered addition to the company's Sports Series range, according to the U.K. enthusiast publication.
McLaren sold more than 1,600 vehicles last year 18% more than its 2013 total. The company is targeting annual sales of 4,000 units by 2017.
