Contract assembler Magna Steyr has signed a letter of intent to build electric cars—preferably in the U.S.—for Los Angeles-based startup EVelozcity Inc., sources tell Automobilwoche.
The report says Magna Steyr may build a U.S. factory specifically for the program. The manufacturer currently assembles vehicles in Graz, Austria, for BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota.
EVelozcity said a year ago it hopes to launch the first of three electric models by 2021. All three models will share the same “skateboard” platform and be equipped with some level of autonomous driving capability. The company’s lineup is expected to consist of a small mainstream model, a light commercial vehicle and a shuttle.
