As expected, Lockheed Martin Corp. has filed a protest over the U.S. Army's award of a $6.8 billion contract to Oshkosh Corp. for a light tactical vehicle to replace the Humvee.
Oshkosh won a bid late last month to supply about 17,000 vehicles under a 25-year-old program that eventually will entail the purchase of some 55,000 so-called Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the Army and Marine Corps. The cost of the full program could reach $30 billion.
Lockheed is the government's largest contractor. Oshkosh ranks 99th, according to Bloomberg News. Lockheed claims its bid offers "the most capable and affordable solution" for the 25-year program.
The Government Accounting Office has until Dec. 17 to rule on Lockheed's protest. Bloomberg estimates only about 2% of challenges to Dept. of Defense awards have been overturned in the past four years.
