Kia Motors Corp. has released sketches and more details of its 2017 Niro hybrid crossover vehicle.

The new model, which will launch globally in the first half of 2016, gets the same powertrain that will power Hyundai’s upcoming hybrid sedan. The setup teams a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed dual-clutch transmission with a small electric motor and 1.56-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Fuel economy figures haven't been announced.

The engine has a 40% thermal efficiency and generates 105 hp and 108 lb-ft of torque.

A plug-in hybrid variant is expected to be added later. Media reports also speculate that a non-hybrid version of the Niro will be offered in some markets.

Positioned between the Soul and Sportage in Kia’s lineup, the Niro has evolved from the original 2013 concept model’s 3-door configuration to a 5-door design. Other changes include a wide “tiger nose” grille, taller belt line, prominent rear spoiler, plastic wheel arch cladding and horizontal tail lamps. The body panels are optimized to improve aerodynamic efficiency, according to the carmaker.
