Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. says it will stop production at its four factories in England during the first week of November ahead of an expected no-deal exit from the European Union.
“We cannot think about it; we just have to do it,” CEO Ralf Speth tells reporters. The shutdowns will occur at JLR’s engine facility in Wolverhampton and assembly plants in Castle Bromwich, Halewood and Solihull.
The U.K. is widely expected to crash out of the EU on Oct. 31 with no replacement trade deals in place. Doing so will trigger new tariffs and customs requirements that are certain to disrupt automotive supply chains. Speth says JLR’s manufacturing operations in Britain require that 20 million parts per day be available on a just-in-time basis.
JLR’s decision to temporarily suspend production follows similar announcements by BMW and Toyota about their British operations. Carmakers have repeatedly warned that lingering supply issues could force them to move production out of the U.K.
