A research team led by Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is developing an 8-speed transmission that combines elements of a dual-clutch architecture with low-range gear ratios and hybrid-electric functionality. Developers say the architecture could boost fuel efficiency by as much as 10%.

The £30 million ($40 million) project—dubbed Transmission Supply Chain Excellence for Next-Generation Dual-Clutch Technologies (Transcend)—is partially funded by the British government. No timeframe for the program was given.

JLR says the integrated 8-speed transmission is designed for rear- and all-wheel-drive vehicles with longitudinally mounted engines. An ultra-wide overall gear ratio spread of 20:1 is more than double that of conventional 8-speed automatics, which would enhance off-road driving applications.

The design is more compact and about 44 lbs lighter than conventional 8-speed transmissions, according to the carmaker.
