A group of Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV owners is suing Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV over the company’s “e-shift” electronic gear shifter.
The complaint, which was filed in a California federal court, seeks class-action status on behalf of affected owners, The Wall Street Journal reports. The lawsuit asks for restitution payments and a court order requiring FCA to tell affected owners not to drive their vehicles until repairs are made.
FCA announced in April it would begin this summer to recall 1.1 million vehicles, including 811,600 Grand Cherokees, to reprogram the shifter’s software.
Owners have complained it’s difficult to tell when the spring-loaded gear shifter is in Park. FCA says it will update control software to make the unusual system automatically shift the transmission into Park when the vehicle is stopped and the driver’s door is opened.
Last weekend “Star Trek” actor Anton Yelchin was killed when his Grand Cherokee rolled away and pinned him against a brick post and security gate.
