Japan's Industry Ministry and Science and Technology Ministry will provide about $54 million in subsidies to support the development of technologies to recycle heat generated by hybrid powertrains, The Nikkei reports.

The goal is to develop air-conditioning systems powered by reclaimed powertrain heat. The newspaper notes that consumers have complained that air conditioners in hybrids aren't as effective as those in conventionally powered vehicles.

The projects, which will begin in the fiscal year that starts April 1, are part of the government's effort to increase the fuel efficiency of hybrid vehicles 30% by 2020.

The initiative will fund projects to develop heat-storing materials (Toray Industries and Mitsubishi Materials) and heat-insulating materials (Panasonic and the Tokyo Institute of Technology).
