Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has pledged to ban the sale of internal combustion cars in Ireland by 2030.
The deadline is 10 years sooner than the same goals announced last year for the U.K. It isn’t clear if the Irish ban would exempt the sale of plug-in hybrid vehicles, as is the case in Britain.
Varadkar’s vow comes as majors of several large English cities are urging British lawmakers to accelerate the ban because of what they describe as a national health crisis caused by rising air pollution levels in urban areas.
Varadkar concedes that meeting the 2030 deadline would mean “profound changes” to Irish life. But he says the ban is a necessary part of a broader effort to make Ireland sustainable.
