South Korea's Integrated Energy Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding with Detroit-based Detroit Electric Holdings Ltd. to begin selling the latter company's SP:01 electric sports cars in on Korea's Jeju Island next year.
Under the agreement, Integrated Energy will buy 300 EVs from Detroit Electric.
The companies also will conduct a vehicle connectivity pilot project on Jeju Island to test vehicle-to-grid, vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-vehicle links. The island aims to become a zero-emission car zone by 2020. The partners hope to eventually deploy Detroit Electric's "360-Powerback" system, which can direct an EV's battery power to a home or the grid, in other parts of Korea.
Finally, Integrated Energy and Detroit Electric will explore so-called second use of EV batteries as fixed energy storage devices.
Detroit Electric plans to begin making the SP:01 in Leamington, U.K., next spring. The company envisions a family of EVs that includes an electric 2+2 performance modes and a sedan that will be developed and assembled in the U.S.
