Nissan Motor Co.’s Infiniti luxury brand is preparing to recall its model QX30 small crossover vehicle in the U.S. to fix an electrical flaw that could trigger the driver’s frontal airbag.
The campaign, which is set to begin in mid-December, targets 17,500 vehicles produced during the 2017-2018 model years.
Nissan says an ungrounded electrostatic charge could trigger the airbag inadvertently. The problem would occur only if the airbag system’s clockspring is broken, which would activate a warning lamp on the instrument panel. The clockspring is used to maintain an electrical connection between the vehicle and the airbag in the steering wheel.
The flawed component is supplied by Daimler AG. Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz GLA crossover and the QX30 share Daimler’s MFA platform. In January Nissan dropped out of a plan to jointly produce next-generation crossovers at a $1 billion factory the companies were building in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The vehicles were to share Daimler’s updated MFA2 platform.
