Nissan Motor Co.'s Infiniti brand is moving ahead with plans for a four-door hybrid supercar due in 2017, followed by a sporty two-seat hybrid by 2020.
Although neither of the projects has production approval, Infiniti officials say the sedan will draw its styling from the Essence concept Infiniti unveiled at the 2009 Geneva auto show. The two-seater will be based on the Emerg-E concept shown first at the U.K.'s Goodwood Festival two years ago.
The new cars are part of Infiniti's ambitious plan to add as many as five new models and capture a 10% share of the global luxury market equal to about 500,000 units by 2020. Nissan's investment in a product expansion to support that growth is estimated at $10 billion through 2020.
Infiniti CEO Johann de Nysschen says the company plans a mix of hybrid sporty and stylish sedans, coupes and crossovers.
Reports say the flagship sedan may be based on Daimler AG's modular rear-drive architecture that will underpin the Mercedes-Benz C-, E- and S-class models. The two-seater is reportedly planned as a mid-engine model.
