A district court in Seoul, South Korea, has sharply limited an effort by workers to force Hyundai Motor Co. to include regular bonuses as part of their base pay.
Base pay is used to calculate a worker's overtime compensation and annual raise. But the court ruled that only about 5,700 of Hyundai's 66,000 workers in Korea were eligible for the extra payments. It also ordered Hyundai to make the payments retroactive for the past three years.
The court order stems from a complaint filed by workers nearly two years ago. The union is disappointed by the narrow scope of the ruling and is pondering an appeal.
