Hyundai Motor Co. is preparing to recall 204,800 Elantra sedans and hatchbacks to fix an electronic defect that could cause the car's steering system to lose its power assist.
The callback involves 2008-2010 model sedans and 2009-2010 Touring hatchbacks.
The flaw involves a fault in the optical torque sensing device in the steering system's electronic control unit. The sensor may sense a discrepancy in steering wheel torque input and disable the power assist function. Hyundai estimates 3% of the recalled cars could be affected by the problem. Dealers will update the control unit.
Such a failure would illuminate a warning lamp in the instrument cluster. Typically the power steering system would reset itself when the ignition is turned off and on again, according to the company.
