Hyundai Mobis Co. has developed an integrated 48-volt mild-hybrid system that it plans to launch next year.
The system combines the converter and battery into an integrated unit for the first time, according to the supplier. It says the streamlined design reduces weight, size and cost while improving cooling efficiency.
Hyundai Mobis also developed the system’s integrated starter/generator, electric compressor, motor-driven power steering and electronic brake. The company currently is conducting validation testing on the components.
The 48-volt mild-hybrid system can boost fuel efficiency by more than 15% by replacing the starter and generator in a conventional combustion-engine vehicle, Hyundai Mobis says. The gains are attributed to regenerative braking, stop-and-go engine idling and supplemental power assistance provided by the 48-volt battery.
