Hyundai Mobis Co. says it has developed the industry’s first electronic parking brake system for large pickup trucks.

The unit is 30% smaller than its mechanical counterpart, costs less and provides 50% more brake capacity, according to the supplier.

Conventional electronic parking brakes are caliper-based systems designed for passenger cars and recreational vehicles. The new Hyundai Mobis system is a drum brake-based unit.

Other suppliers also offer electronic “drum-in-hat” parking brakes, but these have been targeted at heavy-duty trucks and buses rather than pickups, according to Hyundai Mobis. The company says its system is optimized specifically for pickup truck applications.
