Hybrid-powered cars in Japan account for 19% of all passenger vehicles currently on the road, The Japan Times reports.

In the fiscal year ended last March 31, the size of the country’s hybrid fleet rose 15% to 7.5 million units, excluding minivehicles. Hybrids accounted for less than 17% of all cars on the road in the previous fiscal year, according to the Automobile Inspection & Registration Information Assn.

Toyota Motor Corp. started the hybrid movement when it introduced the Prius in 1997. The number of hybrids in Japan reached 1 million units in fiscal 2010.

AIRIA says the number of electric vehicles in service in Japan jumped 25% to 91,400 units in the last fiscal year.
