Hourly wages for workers in American auto plants range from an average high of $65 in Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz factory in Alabama to a low of $38 for Volkswagen AG workers in Tennessee, according to the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Center for Automotive Research.
CAR figures average hourly rates in the U.S. at $58 for General Motors, $57 for Ford and $48 for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The analysis puts BMW's average hourly rate at $39. That compares with $49 for Honda, $48 for Toyota, $42 for Nissan and $41 for Hyundai/Kia.
The study notes that average pay rates vary by company and facility in large part because of differences in the proportion of lower-cost temporary workers employed.
Among domestic carmakers, averages are shaped by the ratio of relatively new union workers who hired on at lower rates under the two-tier wage scheme adopted eight years ago.
