Honda Urges Owners to Act on Takata Airbag Inflator Recalls

Honda Motor Co. is again pleading with U.S. owners of its Acura and Honda brand vehicles to respond to multiple recall notices by allowing dealers to replace defective Takata Corp. airbag inflators. The devices could explode and injure or kill occupants when triggered by a crash.

The company emphasizes that its dealers have ample supplies of replacement inflators (all from non-Takata sources) to handle all outstanding recalls. Honda also will provide owners with a free loaner or rental car on the day their vehicles are repaired.

Honda notes that the “Alpha” type inflators in certain 2001-2003 Acura and Honda models have an extraordinarily high 50% chance of misfiring. About 25% of owners of this group of vehicles still haven’t had them fixed.

The company recommends that cars with the Alpha inflators not be driven at all except to a dealer for free repairs. Honda will tow vehicles to a dealer at no charge if owners prefer. The company says it will even tow cars that aren’t drivable.
