Honda Motor Co. plans to reveal its core hybrid vehicle technology to several Chinese carmakers, The Nikkei reports.
Honda's integrated motor assist (IMA) hybrid powertrain uses an electric motor to aid startup and acceleration but not to propel the vehicle itself. Such systems are lighter and less costly than full hybrid systems but also typically contribute less to fuel economy.
Honda has sold about 800,000 hybrids worldwide since introducing the technology in 1999. The company tells The Nikkei it is launching its IMA sharing scheme in an effort to establish its technology as an industry standard in China.
The company is expected to reveal its hybrid know-how initially to its two Chinese joint venture partners, Dongfeng Motor and Guangzhou Automobile Group.
