Honda Motor Co. is launching a new recall to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators for the driver and passenger positions in 259,500 vehicles sold in Japan, Automotive News reports.
The flawed inflators can explode when activated by a crash, spewing shrapnel into the passenger compartment. The new recall adds to roughly 20 million vehicles Honda has already recalled worldwide to fix the same defect.
Six fatalities have been linked to exploding Takata inflators, all of them in Honda vehicles. So far Honda and10 other carmakers have recalled about 50 million vehicles worldwide to replace such inflators.
Honda says it also will make a second attempt to replace Takata inflators in 79,200 vehicles in Japan previously recalled but not yet repaired. The company expects to announce details soon about still more new or expanded campaigns in other markets, including the U.S.
