Visteon Corp. says hybrids and electric vehicles could squeeze out as much as 30% greater range by using the company's new heat pump in their heating and cooling systems.
EV and hybrid powertrains don't always generate enough heat to warm the passenger compartment. They use battery-driven heaters, which drain the vehicle's propulsion battery.
Visteon's heat pump taps energy in ambient air. The system uses an electric compressor to cool the cabin when running its refrigeration cycle in one direction. It delivers heat when the cycle is reversed.
The company says its pump works faster than a conventional electric heater but consumes about half the power at an ambient temperature of 14 F (-10 C). The system replaces the conventional heater core with a heater that uses R134a or R1234yf refrigerant. The design also can use a modified condenser and a conventional heater core.
