Hamburg, Germany, has begun posting signs along two streets in the city that advise drivers of older diesels they must soon take alternate routes, Reuters reports.

The restriction, the first for a large Germany city, aims to improve air quality. The measure currently is set to take effect later this month and apply only to diesels that don’t meet Euro 5 emission standards.

The city tells Reuters it is awaiting a court decision, likely by the end of this week, about whether it can broaden the ban to cover vehicles that don’t meet Euro 6 limits. The city says it considered alternatives, such as electric buses, but believes a partial diesel ban is the most effective option.

A ruling in February by Germany’s highest federal administrative court granted municipalities the ability to apply their own bans on the highest-polluting diesels.
