Google Inc. has unveiled Android Auto, a voice-enabled in-car interface that allows a smartphone's apps to be operated through the vehicle's infotainment controls and display.

The system will compete with Apple Inc.'s CarPlay offering, which provides similar functionality. Honda, Hyundai and Volvo say they will debut the system in several U.S. models during the 2015 model year.

Google introduced Android Auto on Wednesday at its annual developer conference in San Francisco. The company says carmakers planning to offer the interface are Chevrolet/Opel, Fiat-Chrysler, Ford, Honda/Acura, Hyundai/Kia, the Renault-Nissan alliance, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Suzuki, Volkswagen Group and Volvo.

Several of those companies, including Honda, Hyundai, Volvo and VW's Audi unit, also will offer Apple's system.

Android Auto was developed by Google's Open Automotive Alliance, whose members include Audi, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai and chipmaker NVIDIA.
