General Motors Co. plans to eliminate about 100 research and development jobs at its Technical Center in Warren, Mich., according to The Detroit News. The newspaper's source says GM also will shut down an R&D office in Bangalore, India, eliminating about 90 jobs.

The moves are part of a global restructuring of the company's R&D operations, according to the News. It says GM began notifying affected employees last Thursday. Those workers will be given 30 days to apply for jobs elsewhere at the company to avoid layoffs that will begin in early June.

A source tells the newspaper that R&D work in India will be reassigned to facilities in other countries. About 90 of the unspecified number of affected technicians in India could be reassigned to other jobs within India.

GM says the cuts will enable the company to more efficiently focus on "commercializing customer-focused innovation." It says some R&D projects will be reassigned to Warren and some programs in Warren will be cut back or cancelled.

The News says the restructuring plan also will reassign but not relocate 60 fuel cell researchers at GM's lab in Honeoye Falls, N.Y. Those workers will become part of GM Powertrain, which is based in Pontiac, Mich.
