General Motors Co. and Subaru maker Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. are adding a combined 411,300 vehicles to previous recalls to replace defective Takata Corp. airbag inflators that could explode.
The two companies join BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford and Honda who announced similar expansions last week.
GM will call back 330,200 heavy-duty versions of its 2007-2008 model Chevrolet Silverado and GM Sierra large pickup trucks to replace the passenger-side front airbag inflators. The campaign expands an earlier recall of a separate batch of the trucks to fix the same problem.
Similarly, Subaru will recall Takata passenger-side inflators in 2004-2005 model Subaru Impreza and 2005 model Saab 9-2x sport sedans. The campaign expands an earlier recall of the same models.
The new GM and Subaru campaigns were prompted by Takata's admission in mid-May that it supplied 11 car and truck manufacturers with some 34 million defective inflators between 2000 and 2008. Since then the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has ordered carmakers to review their records and broaden existing Takata recalls accordingly.
