GM Recalls 779,000 Cars for Faulty Ignition Switches

Ignition switches that could be jolted into the "off" position while the car is running have triggered a recall of General Motors Co. Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 small cars in North America.
The campaign covers 778,600 cars produced during the 2005-2007 model years, including 2005-2007 model Cobalts and 2007 model G5s.
About 153,300 of the vehicles are in Canada and 6,100 in Mexico, according to GM.
A bump in the road, the impact of a crash or the weight of too many other keys on the ignition key ring could nudge the switch off, according to GM. It reports more than 20 frontal impact crashes where airbags did not deploy because the ignition switch turned off power to the car before impact.
Dealers will replace the switch. But until they do, GM suggests drivers of affected cars remove unnecessary keys from their key rings.
