General Motors Co. intends to introduce 10 locally produced hybrid or all-electric models in China by the end of the decade.
Matt Tsien, president of GM China, tells reporters at the Shanghai auto show the company targets annual sales of electrified vehicles at 150,000 units by 2020 and about 500,000 by 2025.
GM’s announcement is the latest by carmakers scrambling to meet a Chinese government plan that will demand a sharp increase in plug-in hybrid and EV sales over the next four years. The proposal sets sales quotas for such vehicles at 8% of total new-car sales next year, 10% in 2019 and 12% in 2020.
To support the ambitious sales targets, China’s central government has said it aims to have 800,000 EV charging stations operating in the country by the end of 2017.
