General Motors Co. is offering to supply other carmakers with the next-generation hybrid powertrain it developed for the 2016 model Chevrolet Volt, says Dan Nicholson, vice president of Global Powertrain.

The scheme could help GM better utilize its Volt powertrain capacity, while saving buyers the time and cost of developing their own hybrid systems, Automotive News points out. The newspaper suggests the offer might be attractive to carmakers such as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles that have lagged in electrified powertrains.

Nicholson envisions GM supplying the Volt’s electric transaxle, battery, power electronics and piston-powered on-board generator. Corporate customers would be responsible for packaging and calibrating the system to suit their own vehicles.
