General Motors Co. is offering hourly workers at its Oshawa, Ont., plant as much as C$150,000 ($110,000) to retire before the facility ends production late this year.
The Oshawa complex, which employs about 2,600 hourly workers, current makes Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac XTS large sedans. Canada’s Unifor union tells its members that GM will end output of those two models in October.
The union also says the plant will end final assembly of previous-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra fullsize pickup trucks at the end of December.
Last week GM announced it will spend C$170 million ($126 million) to convert the complex to make stampings and aftermarket parts. The project, which will include building a test track for autonomous vehicles and other advanced technologies, is expected to create 300 jobs at the plant.
