General Motors Co. and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration met three times in June and July to discuss faulty ignition switches in the Saturn Vue crossovers before GM agreed in August to recall 215,000 of the vehicles, The Detroit News reports.
GM documents posted by NHTSA today show the company received 152 reports of parked 2002-2004 model Vues rolling away. The problem is caused by a defect that allows the key to be removed when the switch is not in the "off" position, meaning the engine could continue to run.
The documents show GM discussed the problem with NHTSA representatives on three occasions between mid-June and late July. GM agreed to recall the vehicles on July 31 and announced the campaign a week later.
