GM Launches Electric Bike Brand in Europe

General Motors Co. says it will begin selling two styles of electric bicycles in Europe this spring under its new Ariv brand.
The compact e-bikes will be launched in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, where battery-powered urban bikes are already popular. GM is taking online preorders now (at www.BikeExchange.com) and says sales will begin in the second quarter.
Ariv (pronounced “arrive”) is offering two models. The Meld (pictured), priced at about €2,800 ($3,000) has a rigid frame. The Merge, which sells for around €3,000 ($3,400).
Both bikes offer four levels of pedal-assisted power and can travel at speeds as great as 25 kph (15 mph). GM say each bike’s battery can propel the bike for as much as 64 km (40 miles) per charge. Recharging takes 3.5 hours.
