The revamped 2016 Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid sedan boasts less weight, longer range and a more aerodynamic exterior.

General Motors Co. is unveiling the new model today at the Detroit auto show. The car weighs about 250 lbs less than the 3,800 lbs of the original model. GM says the weight saving was gained by reducing the mass of the car's lithium-ion battery pack, electric drive and power control module.

The redesigned Chevrolet Volt

The new Volt will be able to travel about 50 miles in electric mode, up from 38 miles for the current model. When the onboard piston engine kicks in to recharge the battery, total driving range climbs to 420 miles from 380 miles previously.

An entirely new powertrain starts with a 192-cell, 17.1-kWh battery with 20% more capacity than the first-generation Volt. Power to the wheels is delivered through two equal-size motor/generators, which replace the original combination of a large dedicated propulsion motor and small dedicated generator.

The Volt's new interior

GM says the new configuration enables a smaller, lighter gearbox that functions in both all-electric and hybrid modes. In the latter case, the onboard engine can deliver power directly to the wheels.

The Volt's two motor/generators operate individually or in tandem, with one providing steady-state power and the other contributing additional power for acceleration or heavy loads. Drivers can use a switch to choose a normal, sport or mountain setting.

GM has replaced the Volt's 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 1.5-liter unit that uses regular rather than premium gasoline. The new powerplant boasts a globally sourced aluminum block, cooled exhaust gas recirculation, broader-range cam phasers and a variable-displacement oil pump.

The restyled Volt offers a more upscale look and better aerodynamics to improve energy efficiency. Inside, a revamped interior includes a rudimentary third seating position in the second row.
