Today General Motors Co. began retail sales of its new Chevrolet Bolt electric sedan.
The $37,500 vehicle, which is assembled at GM’s Orion Township factory outside Detroit, is being introduced first in states that mandate EV sales, beginning with California and Oregon.
Availability will spread early next year to several states in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions. Other major metro areas will follow, culminating in nationwide sales by mid-2017. A European variant, the Opel Ampera-e, is due sometime next year.
GM is assembling about 100 Bolts per day on one production shift and is eager to hike output. The company reportedly is targeting annual sales of about 30,000 units.
The Bolt boasts a U.S.-certified range of 238 miles per charge. The five-seater will compete directly with Tesla Motors Inc.’s Model 3 electric sedan when that model reaches the U.S market in 2018.
