General Motors Co. has asked the U.S. to waive its 25% import tax on the small Buick Envision crossover vehicles it builds in China.
GM sold 41,000 of the $32,000 vehicles in the U.S. last year, accounting for 19% of its total volume, according to Autodata Corp. The Envision is supplied exclusively from China, where sales of the model totaled about 159,000 units in 2017.
Reuters says GM loaded up with a six-month supply of Envisions for the American market when the U.S. tariff on imports was still 2.5%. But the company also has added sales incentives and cut the model’s price for 2019 to bolster demand.
GM notes that the relatively low volume of Envisions sold in the U.S. rules out local production. The model competes in the entry-luxury segment with such vehicles as the Cadillac XT5 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
