Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance Chairman Carlos Ghosn declares that consumer fears about the driving range of electric vehicles are over, The Nikkei reports.
Ghosn claims concern about running out of battery power evaporated when EV makers began to “guarantee” a range of more than 300 km (186 miles). He concedes that carmakers were slow to recognize that target as a critical psychological milestone for consumers, even though drivers average only 50 km (31 miles) per day.
The revelation, Ghosn says, came from putting 500,000 EVs into service and studying how owners use them. Now he says, the big goal for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is to drive down the price of EVs.
That is especially true in China, the world’s largest EV market. He says the price of the Nissan Leaf electric sedan is too high for China. He notes that Renault will address that issue next year with an all-electric variant of its Qwid mini-SUV.
The vehicle will be produced in China by eGT New Energy Automotive Co., which is owned 50% by Dongfeng and 25% each by Renault and Nissan.
