German regulators are mulling a plan that would levy a carbon emission tax of about €30 ($33) per metric ton of carbon dioxide emitted by the transportation and housing sectors, sources tell Reuters.

The plan would add an initial surcharge of about €0.10 (11 U.S. cents) per liter of gasoline or diesel fuel.

The scheme is part of a package of “green” initiative due today to help Germany meet European Union CO2 emission targets. Reuters says environmentalists have suggested that the general tax start at €40 per metric ton of emissions but rise to as much as €180 over 10 years.
