German transport authorities plan to conduct a follow-up round of emission tests on 4-cylinder diesels that have been updated by Volkswagen AG to meet regulatory standards, Die Welt reports.
In September VW admitted it doctored 11 million diesel vehicles—including 8.5 million in Europe and 2.5 million in Germany—to evade emission tests. Germany’s transport ministry has since approved a software update VW claims will bring the vehicles into compliance.
Die Welt didn’t say when the ministry plans to confirm the effectiveness of the update, and German transport ministry officials did not immediately comment. Authorities in other European countries are expected to accept Germany’s assessment of the VW updates.
VW also has proposed relatively simple software updates to adjust emissions from V-6 diesels and an array of diesel and gasoline engines with incorrect carbon dioxide and fuel economy ratings. Die Welt didn’t indicate whether German regulators intend to recheck those engines too.
