Germany’s Sono Motors GmbH has inked a deal with National Electric Vehicle Sweden to build an electric car at the former Saab plant in Trollhattan, Sweden.

NEVS, which acquired the factory from bankrupt Saab Automobile AB in 2012, will launch production of the Sono Sion by the end of next year. The eight-year contract with Sono calls for about 43,000 Sions to be built  per year through 2028.

Sono’s five-door Sion hatchback will team a 35-kWh lithium-ion battery with a 163-hp electric motor. Solar panels on the car’s roof can add as much as 20 miles of additional range to the battery’s estimated 160-mile capacity, according to the carmaker.

Sono says it has received nearly 10,000 pre-orders for the Sion. The company now lists the starting price at 25,500 ($29,000), which is considerably higher than the €16,000 price indicated by the company eight months ago.
